Wakonda cross country off to a running start by Ally Eckert Wakonda cross country is off to great start. Though their talent pool may have changed a bit, they still are running strong.
The USD High School Challenge on Sept. 4 pitted the runners against Omaha Bryan, SF Roosevelt, SF Lincoln, and Yankton.
Rob Gregoire finished fourth with a time of 16:47.54. Eric Skonhovd came in 23rd with a time of 18:31.09. Tyler Moser finished 38th with a time 19:24.75. Finishing out the boys was Bo Martz, who came in 49th with a time of 20:31.51.
Katie Sokolowski came in 31st in her race with a time of 17:45.01.
Traveling to Scotland on Sept. 7, Wakonda had three runners in the top five of the boys 5K, putting the team in first place and all but one runner achieved their personal best.
Proving to be the top runner again is Gregoire, finishing first with a time of 16:28.00, taking his third individual championship of the year. Skonhovd finished third with a time of 17:58.00. Martz finished out the top five in fifth place with a time of 18:22.00 which is the third fastest time for the meet by a sophomore. Moser came in 17th with a time of 19:55.00.
Wakonda's only girl runner, Sokolowski, finished ninth in the girls 4K with a time of 16:26.00. This was the fastest run by a Wakonda runner on this course.
On Sept. 11, the team had their next meet at Sioux Falls. This meet was the Augustana Meet of Champions. Wakonda, unfortunately, did not do as well this time around. This is because they ran against A and AA schools from all over the area.
In the boys 5K, Skonhovd took 37th with a time of 19:30.50. Moser placed 87th with a time of 21:19.70. Sokolowski placed 116th with a time of 20:16.50 in the 4K race.
Gregoire was having problems with his ankle and couldn't run in this meet.
When the runners traveled to Freeman on Sept. 14, they came back fighting. With all the boys placing in the top 10, the team finished in first.
Gregoire came in first with a time of 16:02, winning another championship and bringing his total to four so far this season. Skonhovd finished third with a time of 16:30. Moser and Martz finished at ninth and 10th with a time of 17:28. They all ran their fastest on this course.
Sokolowski placed 22nd in her race with a time of 17:28. Tyler Knudson ran his first JV race this season on this course. He came in 24th with a time of 17:21, not bad for only having a week of practice.
Wakonda may have had a bad day but they will surely be one of the top teams in the state again.
