"As a 4-H member, you put yourself in the driver's sear for life," said Karla Trautman, South Dakota State University Extension's Program Leader for Youth Development/4-H. "4-H's greatest contribution to you will be the development of your personal leadership skills. From becoming more self-confident to asking the right questions, you will learn how to get along with others and how to work with people of all ages. That means you will be prepared to make the right decisions with confidence."
Kids ages 8 to 19 can join the youth development organization, now in its 102nd year. Find out more about South Dakota 4-H by visiting its Web site at http://4h.sdstate.edu/.
"Knowledge is power and learning doesn't have to be boring or hard! 4-H is built around your active participation," said Trautman. "It's all hands-on, from creating your own Web site, being a junior counselor at camp, taking a field trip or teaching something you know to someone else."
Trautman added that 4-H offers young people the opportunity to use their talents, skills and vision to make their communities better places to live.
"Most of us want to make a difference and what better place to do that than the place where you live?" Trautman said. "Giving of your time and service is one way you strengthen your community."
and contribute as one of its citizens."
