Canton falls 40-38 to VMS eighth-graders by Jim Prosser Temperatures in the high 70s greeted the Redbird eighth-grade football team as they faced Canton on Tuesday, Oct. 5.
Demonstrating an awesome display of intensity and speed on both defense and offense, the visiting young Tanagers survived a late surge by Canton and held on to win 40-38.
The return of Kyle Nemec and Chris Cameron on the offensive line greatly aided the effort.
"Jeremy Amundson and John Noteboom had played well during their absence, but it sure is nice to have those two big kids back," said coach Jamie Parish.
Offensive scoring summaries: Andrew Eidem returned the opening kick for a TD, and scored two other TDs on runs. Tony Thomas had a nice pass to Blaine Olson for a TD just before the half; Greg Anderson and Tyler Steele added a rushing TD each to round out the scoring.
The Redbird defense was a community project as it bent a lot, and broke a couple times. Leading tacklers were: Eidem, Olson, Nemec, and Jeff Anglin.
They actually did some good things on defense during the game, but gave up some big plays which kept the home team in the game. Corey Taggart blocked a kick that sealed the win with less than 30 seconds to play.
"We hope to continue to improve and play well against Yankton in our season finale," Parish said.
