Frosh end season with victory over Canton by Jim Prosser The Tanager freshman football team lifted its season record to 4-1 on Oct. 14, when they used a solid defense and spectacular offense to compile a 36-0 decision over Canton in Vermillion.
Taking advantage of some hard hitting, fumble causing tackles and a couple of pass interceptions, the young Tanagers bowled over the opponents with 275 yards of offense, and a swarming defense which stopped nearly every attempt to advance the football.
Reid Meierkort completed 8 passes in 14 attempts for a 124 total yards, as receivers Jackson Freidel (1 for 38 and a TD), Matt Nelson (1 for 8), Luke Heine (2 for 42 and a TD), Cody Miller (2 for 35), and Jordan Merrigan (2 for 6), accounted for nearly half the team's offensive total.
Beside Jackson's TD, Heine scored on a run of 5 yards and Meierkort scored on a short run. Nelson intercepted a pass and returned it 62 yards for the other TD. Two of the pass completions were 2-point conversions, but of the incomplete passes registered by Meierkort, at least 3 were dropped by a open receiver. Leading rushers were: Jerrod 74 yards, including an extra 2-point run; Jackson 72 yards, and Heine 59 yards.
The Tanager freshmen put forth a spirited effort defensively with the following tackle results: Heine 15; C.J. Haakinson 7; Ryan Husby 6; Meierkort 4 and a pass interception; Miller and Jerrod Freidel 4 each; five others on the roster recorded stops. The team registered 58 tackles. Jackson Freidel, Mike Fedderson, and Husby each recovered a fumble.
"We did a nice job defensively, bending at times, but never breaking," said coach Jason Huska.
