Frosh football team has close 24-18 loss to Yankton by Jim Prosser On Thursday, Sept. 30 at the VHS field, the Tanager freshman team put up a fierce fight against a tough Yankton crew, which took advantage of three home team fumbles to build a 17-6 halftime lead.
Coach Jason Huska had these comments about the team's performance: "The team played an awesome offensive game (except for the turnovers) and a superb defensive effort considering the 'short field' situations. In the game, they fought hard and gave their best efforts on both sides of the line of scrimmage."
While the visitors scored, they didn't dominate the game, as the Tanagers racked up 383 total yards against 225 by Yankton. In fact, if not for their quarterback (who ran for 2 TDs, kicked 3 EPs, and a field goal) their team had eight first downs compared with 18 for the Tanagers!
Offensively, Jerrod Freidel gained 143 yards on 14 carries; QB Reid Meiercort 101 yards on 9 carries, 4-10 passing for another 53 yards; and Luke Heine 81/11. Heine scored on a 6-yard run and a 15-yard pass from Meiercort who scored the other TD on a 38-yard end run scamper on a QB keeper.
Individual defense results: Heine 13 Ts; Cody Miller and Jordan Merrigan 8 Ts, each; Jerrod Friedel and Ryan Husby 7 Ts, each; Meiercort claimed 6 and C.J. Haakinson had 5 as the team recorded 70 tackles total. The team's record is 2-1.
