New PBS series shines spotlight on state's kids In a groundbreaking new children's series, Postcards from Buster, premiering Oct. 11 on SDPB Television, Arthur's best friend Buster is taking off on a journey through North America.
Thanks to his video camera, and with the help of some new friends, he introduces four- to eight-year-old viewers nationwide to the varied cultures and places he encounters including a stop right here in South Dakota!
In an episode to air Thursday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. Buster experiences the traditions, history and adventure of South Dakota. Chris, a direct descendent of a Lakota soldier, takes Buster behind the scenes at the Crazy Horse monument. Buster also gets a close-up look at a South Dakota tradition with the Lantis family on a buffalo roundup full of cowboy adventure. The series' visit to our state will also be featured as an entry in Buster's personal blog his online travel diary on the series' Web site at pbskidsgo.org/buster.
Postcards from Buster blends animation with first-person, live-action documentary footage, in an effort to help children build a greater understanding and appreciation of the unique cultures that make up our world neighborhood. Buster, one of the most popular characters on Arthur, the Emmy Award-winning animated series based on Marc Brown's books about an eight-year-old aardvark and his family and friends, accompanies his airline pilot father as he flies the Latin rock group Los Viajeros on a concert tour. To stay in touch with friends back home, Buster mails them live-action video "postcards" he creates of the people and places he visits using a small video camera. Narrated by Buster, his P.O.V.-style footage is woven seamlessly into each animated story.
As Buster explores new cultures and communities, his experiences also foster improved literacy, language, and communication skills for children who are learning English. The show models language that young English learners need to make new friends; initiate and continue conversations; share information about themselves; and ask questions to learn more about another person's life and interests.
Postcards from Buster premieres Monday, Oct. 11 on PBS KIDS GO! on SDPB TV, a new educational multimedia destination created by, for, and about early elementary school kids airing weekdays at 3 p.m.
