Marjorie A. Doohen, 85, Vermillion, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center, Sioux City, IA.
She was born Jan. 4, 1919 to Raymond and Margaret (Blanche) Heck at Elk Point. She graduated from Elk Point High School in 1937, and worked a clerk in the Union County Courthouse. She married Bernard J. Doohen on Sept. 23, 1946 in Elk Point. Mr. Doohen died May 14, 2001.
The couple farmed the Doohen family farm near Garryowen. In 1967, they farmed near Wakonda, and in 1978, they moved into Vermillion, where Mrs. Doohen worked for Social Services as a homemaker health aide for six years.
She enjoyed reading, cards, dancing and the simple pleasures of life. Mrs. Doohen was a member of the St. Agnes Catholic Church, Vermillion, the Catholic Daughters of America, St. Agnes Court #687 and the Altar Society.
Survivors include three sons, James (Pat) Doohen and Tom Doohen, both of Vermillion, and Jerry (Sheila) Doohen, Dickinson, ND; five grandchildren, Tyler, Dawn, Sarah, Laura and Lisa; and two sisters, Mary Ellen French, Elk Point, and Venita Suing, Sioux City, IA.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Vermillion, with the Rev. Rodney Farke officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Vermillion.
Visitation was held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the church, with a scripture service at 7 p.m.
Mrs. Doohen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother, Raymond Heck.
Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home, Vermillion, was in charge of arrangements.
Mary A. Manning, 91, of Vermillion, died Friday, Sept. 24, 2004 at the Sioux Valley Vermillion Care Center.
Mary O'Connell was born Dec. 14, 1912 in Beresford, to John and Caroline (Henle) O'Connell. She attended the Cleveland Country School, and married Bernard Manning on Nov. 30, 1933 in Beresford.
Mrs. Manning worked as a nurse's aid for many years at Dakota Hospital in Vermillion, and was a member of the Catholic Daughters, St. Agnes Court, St. Agnes Altar Society, and the VFW Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bernard, four brothers, and four sisters.
Survivors include three sons, Don (Karen) Manning of Des Moines, IA, Dennis (Sally) Manning of Burbank, and Duane Manning of Phoenix, AZ; a daughter, Agnes (Dick) Mockler of Burbank; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral Mass was 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 28, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Vermillion, with burial in the Garryowen Cemetery, rural Vermillion.
Visitation began at 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, with a rosary at 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at the church. Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion handled the arrangements.
