Roughriders rough up Tanager JV football team by Jim Prosser The Vermillion JV football team lost 50-16 to a difficult Sioux Falls Roosevelt team in a game played at the VHS field on Monday, Sept. 20.
The home team outscored the visitors 16-8 in the second half. Unfortunately, the Tanagers suffered a case of "fumble-itis" in the first half, turning the ball over five times, allowing the Roughriders to build a 42-0 halftime advantage. The short field positions following the turnovers made it difficult for the defense, which made some excellent plays defensively, but couldn't stop the onslaught.
The circumstances dictated the use of some of the younger reserves and, while there was another fumble, it was not a determining factor to the overall performance during the rest of the contest.
Scoring for Vermillion were Kyle Huber on a five-yard run, and Joe Miller on a 10-yard pass from Ryan Scheidel. Sam Laprath and Ryan Gilbertson each ran for 2-point conversions.
Offensively, Kyle Brunick was 1-3-1 passing for seven yards, and Scheidel went 4-8-0 for 42 yards. Freshman Reid Meierkort was the leading rusher with 55 yards, Laprath carried the ball nine times totaling 30 yards, and caught a pass. Other pass receptors were Gilbertson (14); Bobby Dykstra (15); Joe Miller (10); and Myles Runyon (seven).
Leading the beleaguered defense was Canka Wilch who recorded 13 tackles and a QB sack. Brunick had seven Ks, Chris Merrigan six, and Chris Taylor five. Scheidel recovered a fumble. Six other defenders registered three or four tackles, and nine others each had two Ts in the defensive struggle.
The JV record is 1-2 and the team will face Lennox there on Monday, Oct. 4.
