Tanager volleyball team participates in MN tournament by Jim Prosser At the Jackson County tournament last weekend (Sept. 18), the Tanagers couldn't sustain a rhythm. Sparks of greatness shone in brief moments of every match.

"Leading the way for the Tanagers, in her best tournament ever, was Michelle Olson. She led the team in consistency, serving, hitting, and all-around defense," said Coach Lenni Billberg. "In a revenge match with Pipestone the girls had two game point attempts before falling 24-25, then losing the second 20-25."

Significant team stats included Annie Carlson who recorded 15 attacks, 6 passes, 1 kill, 2 blocks, 5 digs, and 7 points on serve. She was aided by Melissa Olson with 10 A, 3 B, 2 K, and 5 sv pts; also contributing were: Ellen Odson � 5 SA, 5 D, 4 sv pts; Michelle Olson had 5 P, 13 A, 1 K, 11 sv pts, and 4 D; and Heather Walker � 12 A, 2 D, 3 A, 10 sv pts, 1 ace.

"Our best game of the day was our victory against the ladies of Red Rock Central (25-21) in the second of the match. We lost the first game 18-25 but, at one time during the match, Walker and Odson stopped every offensive attack their team could muster," Billberg said.

Stats for the Tanagers were: Carlson led with 7 P, 17 A, 2 D, 7 K, and 4 S-P; Melissa Olson � 12 A, 3 P, 4 K, 5 S-P; Odson was credited with 14 assists, 6 sv pts; Walker � 9 A, 5 sv pts, 1 ace; Michelle Olson � 5 P, 8 A, 5 D, 6 sv pts.

Match #3 pitted the Tanagers against Albert Lea with scores of 21-25, 18-25.

"After rough first matches, Annie Carlson stormed back to lead the team in hitting, as our team stats show," said the coach.

Carlson � 5 P, 19 A, 5 K, 4 D, 8 sv pts; Odson � 6 D, 15 set assists, 11 S-P, 1 ace; Michelle Olson � 7 P, 15 A, 3 K, 6 D, and 4 S-P; Britt Weydert had 9P, 2 D, 5 sv pts, 1 ace; and Heather Walker had 8 A, 2 K, 5 D, 5 S-P.

The last pool play match was against the ladies from Westfield/Walnut Grove. The scores were 25-22, 20-25, 10-15. Stats were: Carlson � 15 P, 14 A, 2 K, 6 D, 6 S-P; Melissa Olson � 3 P, 11 A, 3 K, 1 B, 1 D, 6 S-P, 1 ace; Michelle Olson � 11 P, 21 A, 4 K, 9 S-P; Odson � 6 A, 4 D, 12 assists, 13 sv pts; Weydert � 7 A, 3 D, 14 sv pts, 3 aces; Walker � 6 P, 16 A, 5 K, 3 sv pts.

"We finished 12th for the weekend, but return ready to show off our new aggressive style," Billberg said.
