Teams play well in volleyball tournament by Jim Prosser On Tuesday, Oct. 19, the Tanager junior varsity teams recorded a 2-0 win over the Lady Watchdogs at the Beresford gym.
Krista Froke led the offense attack with 4 kills in the team's 25-23, 25-18 performance. Kinsey Weydert produced 11 set assists. Alicia Brown had 2 ace serves.
"The girls played a good match since we have been making a lot of changes and they are adapting very well," said coach Lori Jered."
Defensively, Ariel Hofman had 6 digs; Froke and Brown each had 2 blocks.
The team defeated Dakota Valley 2-0 on Thursday, Oct. 21, then traveled to Elk Point on Saturday, Oct. 23 for a non-varsity tournament involving six teams (Sioux City East, Sioux City Heelan, Whiting, Elk Point/Jefferson JV, Elk Point/Jefferson C team, and Vermillion JV).
The Tanagers faced the EP/J C team and won 25-21, 25-16. Brittni Stewart led the offense with 4 kills, followed by Annie Roche and Paige Prosser with 3 Ks each. Kinsey Weydert had 14 set assists. Leading servers were Weydert and Brown each with 6 aces. Hofman picked up 3 digs.
In the second match the Tanagers lost to a tough Heelan team 25-22, 25-15.
"In the first game of the match, we were down 10-4 and showed a lot of character coming back to nearly win the game," Jerred said.
Leading the offense were Prosser and Stewart each with 4 Ks. Weydert had 11 set assists. Prosser led all servers, 9 for 9, 2 aces. Defensively, Brown had 9 blocks and 9 digs. Hofman added 8 digs and played great defense in the libero spot.
The third match pitted the Tanagers against EP/J JV and was decided in three games 23-25, 25-17, 17-15 in favor of Vermillion. Froke led the offense with 7 kills, and Stewart had 4. Weydert had 20 set assists and 4 aces. Defensively, Brown had 9 digs and 5 blocks.
"This match was the best volleyball we've played all year," Jerred said. Our defense was awesome."
The championship match was a rematch against Heelan and the two-game result was a 25-16, 25-11 victory over the Tanagers. Froke had 3 kills; Weydert � 9 set assists; Brown had 2 kills and 2 aces. On defense, Brown had 4 blocks and Hofman had 5 digs.
The tournament second place leaves the Tanager JV season record at 13-5.
