JV team loses to Yankton by Jim Prosser In a crisply played football game, the Tanager JV team suffered an uncharacteristic collapse against Yankton in the game at the Yankton Middle School field on Monday, Oct. 18.
Falling behind 34-0 at halftime, the "hill to be climbed" was more than they could attain. While the second half was a VHS JV 8-6 advantage, the die had been cast for the final score of 40-8.
Yankton had a total offense of nearly 320 yards while the Tanager JVs gained just under 100 yards rushing and 50 passing yardage.
Leading runner for Vermillion was Jerrod Freidel who gained 74 yards on 8 carries. Their touchdown came late in the fourth quarter when Reid Meierkort scored on a three-yard pass from Ryan Scheidel, and Friedel ran for the 2-point conversion.
A stiff defense showed some sterling efforts by Luke Heine (12 Ts, forced fumble); Eric McPherson (8 Ts); Harrison Hawley and John Gregg (6 Ts each); Schiedel and Andrew Pearson (5 Ts each).
