Mayer takes home state championship Wakonda freshman Jordan Mayer took home the South Dakota Punt, Pass, and Kick championship in the 14-15-year-old division.
Mayer competed Saturday, Nov. 6 at Sioux Falls Howard Wood Field.
Mayer's journey began in the Wakonda local competition on Sept. 19 with a winning total of 384 feet and 11 inches.
On Oct. 3, he traveled to Dakota Valley for the sectional meet. There were six boys competing; Mayer took hold of the opportunity and won the sectional competition with a total of 371 feet.
At the state competition Nov. 6, Mayer became the state champ with a score of 322 feet during the half time of the USF vs. Morningside game.
Sectional scores are compared with those across South Dakota and in the nearby states of Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska and North Dakota.
Only the top five sectional scores advanced to the NFL Team competition for each age bracket. Winners wore their favorite NFL jerseys and competed at the Metrodome/Vikings Game in Minneapolis on Nov. 21.
Mayer was in sixth place in the upper Midwest States section.
