USD soccer team garners victory over Augustana The South Dakota women's team (16-4, 5-1 NCC) picked up a 2-1, first-round win over Augustana (6-13, 0-6 NCC) in the North Central Conference Tournament. It was the first-ever victory for the Coyotes in postseason play.
While the Vikings did score first and led at halftime, 1-0, the Coyotes battled back in the second half and scored two goals within 1:26 of each other.
Erin Seidel scored first on an assist from Kelly Dudgeon at 29:39 to give Augustana the lead.
In the second half, South Dakota made their charge, starting with a Bethany Hamilton (Rapid City) goal at 55:34. Hamilton, a sophomore, put the ball past Viking goalie Charise Hayward on a rebound from fellow sophomore Tina Brummer's (Gretna, NE) shot. Brummer got her shot after Taryn Ketter's (Columbus, NE) header went off the bar. It was Hamilton's second goal of the season.
At the 57-minute mark, Brummer beat the Vikings down the field and put the ball into the net for the game-winner and her 12th goal of the season. Her 12 goals ties her for third on the single season goals list at South Dakota. She ties a mark set by Janel Johnson in 2000.
For the Coyotes, Candice Martinez (Aurora, CO) improved to 12-3 in goal, with three saves in 90 minutes of action.
USD outshot Augustana, 12-10, and had two more shots on goal, 6-4.
The second-seeded Coyotes, travel to Omaha, NE Nov. 5-6, for the semifinal and finals of the NCC tournament. USD will play either North Dakota or Minnesota Duluth.
