USD volleyball team earns trip to nationals For the first time in school history, the South Dakota volleyball team has earned a berth to the national playoffs.
The South Dakota women's volleyball squad (17-13, 9-3 NCC) has been awarded the third seed in the North Central Regional and will play Southwest Minnesota State, the sixth seed, on Thursday in first round play at St. Paul, MN.
The regional, to be held at Concordia-St. Paul University, includes the following matchups: top-seeded Minnesota Duluth (23-4) vs. eighth-seeded St. Cloud State (19-11); second-seeded Concordia-St. Paul (30-2) vs. seventh-seeded Minnesota State-Moorhead (23-7); third-seeded South Dakota (17-13) vs. sixth-seeded Southwest Minnesota State (22-9); and fourth-seeded Augustana (17-9) vs. fifth-seeded Nebraska-Omaha (16-10).
On Sunday night, the NCAA Division II women's volleyball committee announced a field of 64 teams for the 2004 NCAA Division II championship. Eight eight-team regionals will be played at on-campus sites. Regional competition will be single elimination, best three of five game matches and will not include a third-place match. The winners of the regionals advance to the finals Dec. 2-4 on the campus of one of the final eight institutions.
This has been a special season for the Coyotes, which finished 9-3 and second in the NCC, the highest finish in school history and the most conference wins ever at USD.
