VHS honor students named Ben Schimelfening and Michelle Rydell were named as the first VHS Students of the Month for September. These two seniors are being rewarded for their academic and extra-curricular achievement with a $100 scholarship from First National Bank in Vermillion.
Schimelfening's list of activities is extensive, which includes Quiz Bowl, debate, Science Club, Student Council, Civil Air Patrol, tennis, and German Club. He has been in National Honor Society, Student Council treasurer, and class secretary/ treasurer.
According to his faculty endorsement, "Ben is polite, humorous, and helpful." His parents are James and Teresa Schimelfening. Ben is applying to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs to major in aeronautical engineering. His desire is to become a fighter pilot.
Rydell's endorsement stated that "as the newspaper editor, she takes seriously the quality of the production and takes any steps necessary to succeed." She, too, has a long list of activities and achievements including Student Council, Jazz Band, tennis, Show Choir, yearbook, Young Republicans, and Vermillionaire editor.
She intends to enter Northwestern College in Orange City, IA, to double major in English and in literature education. She would like to become a college literature professor. Her parents are James and Iris Rydell.
