VHS volleyball team claims District 8A win

VHS volleyball team claims District 8A win by Jim Prosser The Vermillion volleyball team outscored Elk Point/Jefferson last Monday night, Nov. 2, when they won a five-game first round District 8A match at the Dakota Valley High School gym, 25-21, 18-25, 25-23, 21-25, 16-14 to eliminate EP/J from the District 8A tournament.

"In the third straight five-game match with EP/J, the Tanagers rallied to the semi-final victory," said coach Lenni Billberg. "Defensive effort and emotion were the tale of the game. Never once did the girls feel a win was in question. Leading defender with 15 digs, Brittany Campbell, and a crew, dug for a season high 88."

Individual stats for the Tanager team were: Ellen Odson � 15 A, 6 K,12 D, 31 SA, 19 pos, 1 ace; Michelle Olson � 2.29 pass avg., 17 P, 37 A, 11 K, 8 D, 13 pos; Annie Carlson � 18 P, 57 A, 12 K, 11 D, 8 pos. Other leaders were: Melissa Olson � 20 A, 6 K, 1 B, 3 D, 22 pos; Brittany Babb � 20 A, 6 K, 6 D; Campbell � 18 P, 15 D; Brittney Weydert � 17 P, 14 D, 13 pos; and Heather Walker � 5 P, 18 A, 5 K, 7 digs and 18 pos; Ariel Hofman � 10 P, 12 D.

"This was truly a team effort wherein each person played their pivotal role," Billberg said. "For example, Kinsey Weydert came off the bench for the first time all season to contribute some very important serves. Babb had her best match of the season and Odson led the team with her surprising emotional displays."
