Coyote women turn back Mount Marty, 66-60 South Dakota's Kayla Jacobs drives past Mount Marty defender during basketball action Sunday in the DakotaDome. Vanessa Yanez and Jenni Flynn recorded double doubles to lead the 24th-ranked South Dakota women's basketball team (8-2) to a 66-60 win over Mount Marty in nonconference women's basketball on Sunday at the DakotaDome.
Yanez, a sophomore from Wagner, recorded her second career double-double with a team-high 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. She also had two steals and an assist in 33 minutes of action.
Flynn, a sophomore from South Sioux City, NE, had 14 points and 11 rebounds as she recorded her second double-double of the season and fifth in her career.
Brittany Bessert, a junior from Fort Collins, CO, added 15 points and five rebounds while Meghan Woster, a junior from Sioux Falls, recorded 8 points, four assists, five blocked shots and two steals. Woster tied a career high with the five blocked shots.
Overall, the Coyotes hit 21-of-59 field goals for a season-low 35.6 percent, including 8-of-26 from 3-point range for 30.8 percent. USD was 16-of-23 from the foul line for 69.6 percent. While USD had trouble shooting, the Coyotes won the rebound battle, 48 to 36.
Mount Marty was led by Jess Krull with 22 points. The Lancers hit 21-of-59 field goals for 35.6 percent, including 2-of-13 from 3-point range for 15.4 percent. Mount Marty hit 16-of-22 free throws for 72.7 percent.
South Dakota jumped to an early 14-6 lead after Flynn connected on a 3-point field goal at the 15:37 mark of the first half. The Lancers trimmed the lead to 16-13 at the 11:20 mark, before a jumper by Yanez at the 8:58 mark provided South Dakota with a 22-16 advantage.
Two free throws by Yanez helped the Coyotes build a 29-21 lead with 3:53 to play in the first half. A 3-pointer by Ashley Bjorkman (Vermillion) helped USD to a 32-23 lead with 1:30 left in the half. South Dakota took a 35-27 advantage to the halftime break.
Early in the second half, Bessert scored inside to give USD a 37-29 lead with 18:45 to play. Mount Marty shaved the lead to 37-34 when Krull hit a jumper at the 17:35 mark.
USD's lead swung from 4 to 9 points throughout the second-half. A 3-point shot by Yanez gave USD a 46-38 lead with 14:53 left in the game.
Bjorkman, who scored 6 points, hit her second 3-point field goal to give USD a 53-44 lead with 8:10 left on the game clock. Mount Marty continued to creep back into the game with a pair of foul shots by Krull cutting USD's lead to 60-56 with 4:26 to play. Bessert hit a jumper with 3:12 left to play as USD led 62-56. A foul shot by Janielle Bryan (Bellevue, NE), who had 4 points and seven rebounds, gave USD a 65-58 lead with 29 seconds left in the game.
