Department opens flu shots to all South Dakotans The Department of Health has lifted all restrictions for flu vaccine and is encouraging any South Dakotans who are interested to get the shot.
"Providers are telling us that they still have vaccine available, even after last week's expansion of the guidelines to include more risk groups," said Secretary of Health Doneen Hollingsworth. "We appreciate very much those South Dakotans who willingly stepped aside when we asked them to reserve the shots for the high risk. We're glad that we can now make shots available to some of them."
Individuals should call their local provider or one of the department's community health services offices to request a shot. A listing of the community health offices is on the Web at www.state.sd.us/doh /Address.
Hollingsworth said the department assessment of vaccine supply indicates more than 70 percent of the 221,763 doses reported in the state have been administered to date.
"Now that the high risk who want vaccine have gotten it, rather than let any remaining vaccine go to waste, we decided to open it up to everyone and increase the level of protection," said Hollingsworth. "With the holiday travel season now underway and flu activity still low in the state, now is a very good time to be vaccinated. We'll give the vaccine until it's gone."
