Irene-Wakonda Eagles capture championship On Saturday in Viborg the Irene-Wakonda Eagles Junior High girls' basketball team captured the Tri-Valley Conference Championship trophy in convincing style.
In the first round the Eagles defeated Alcester-Hudson 35-16. Top scorers were Kelli Johnston with 10 and Melanie Kathol with nine.
In the second round I-W rolled over Hurley by a score of 39-13. Leading the way again was Kathol with 12 points; Johnston added eight and Brittney Bakke chipped in with six points.
The championship game would feature I-W versus Viborg who earned their way into the title game by beating Baltic and Centerville. In the championship game the young I-W Eagles jumped out to an early 10-4 lead and never looked back.
The final score was I-W 36 and Viborg 21. Casey Hessman led the way with nine points, Johnston had eight, and Bakke and Nicole Nielsen each added six points.
In the final quarter the cool, confident Eagles made 8 out of 9 free throws. The Eagles finished the season with a winning record of 16-4.
