USD defeats Truman State The South Dakota men's basketball team (3-0) had six players score in double figures and captured an 80-68 win over Truman State (0-5) in the second day of the Nebraska-Omaha Thanksgiving Basketball Classic in Omaha, NE.
With a pair of wins this weekend, the Coyotes have now won 74 straight (regular season) nonconference games while head coach Dave Boots has been at South Dakota. Overall, USD has now won 33 of its last 35 nonconference games.
South Dakota was led by Aaron Green, who had his first double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. He hit 5-of-8 from the field, including both of his 3-point field goal attempts. Green also was 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.
Senior center Steve Anderson of Rapid City added 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots, while senior guard Josh Mueller of Hartford had 14 points, five rebounds and four assists. It was Mueller's third straight double digit scoring game of the season. He is averaging 21.3 points per game.
Junior guard David Nour of Armour, added 13 points and three assists while Turner Trofholz of Schuyler, NE, had 11 points and freshman Dustin Little of Castlewood, had 10 points.
Overall, USD hit 24-of-48 field goals for 50 percent, including 5-of-11 from 3-point range. USD hit 27-of-34 free throws for 79.4 percent. USD is now hitting 51.7 percent from the field and 59.3 percent from 3-point range.
Both teams traded baskets early in the game before a 3-pointer by Green gave USD a 14-8 lead with 12:27 left in the first half. Truman State cut the lead to 19-17 on a jumper by Kirby. South Dakota answered with a 13-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Nour, to build a 32-17 lead with 5:29 to play in the half. Another jumper by Nour with one second left in the first half gave USD its largest lead of the game at 43-26.
Trofholz scored all 11 of his points in the first half. Green had 9 points while Nour and Little both had 8 points in the opening half of play.
Truman State opened the second half on a 16-8 run to close the gap to 51-42 at the 14:14 mark. From that mark, the Coyotes built the lead to double figures on several occassions with Truman State periodically trimming the margin to single digits.
Green's second 3-point field goal of the game provided the Coyotes with a 69-55 lead with 5:06 to play. A 3-point play by the Bulldogs' Agbo Grant cut the Coyotes' lead to 73-64 with 1:04 to play.
From that point, the Coyotes hit 9-of-10 free throws to hold off the Bulldogs. Mueller hit 4-of-4 and Nour was 3-of-4 from the line in the final minute.
South Dakota will return home for the South Dakota Basketball Classic on Dec. 3-4 at the DakotaDome. The Coyotes will face Southwest Minnesota State on Friday at 8 p.m. and then host Minnesota State Moorhead at 8 p.m. on Dec. 4.
