VHS downed by Cardinals' last shot Vermillion Tanager Matt Preszler gets past a Cardinal defender to score during Monday's action in the VHS gymnasium. by Jim Prosser The Cardinals� Mark Martindale made a driving lay-up to break a tie score with just four seconds left in the game as the Vermillion Tanagers fell victim to a second-half rally and were nipped by South Sioux City, NE 44-42 in boys� basketball Dec. 13 at home.
Vermillion had led by five at halftime.
Martindale had previously scored a basket and free throw to tie the score 42-42 with one minute left in the game.
The Tanagers jumped in front 12-9 at the end of the first period, led 26-21 after the second quarter, and then trailed 33-29 going into the final period.
�The difference in the game was the third quarter,� said coach Jason Huska. �We got outscored 12 to 3. I thought we played hard and we got some good looks offensively. We had a chance with a last second shot but came up short.�
In the second quarter, Chad Teigen made a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
In the final period, Chris Teigen missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Vermillion varsity remained winless at 0-4, while South Sioux City is now 3-2.
Vermillion hit 6 of 22 three-point tries and connected on 10 of 17 from the line. The Tanagers made 13 of 37 from the field, while South Sioux City was 17 of 36 from the field. South Sioux City connected on 4 of 15 three-point attempts and hit 6 of 10 free throw tries.
