VHS wrestling team is mix of differing grades by Jim Prosser Coach Casey O'Connor is starting his fourth year as the head of the Vermillion wrestling program in the local school district.
Each year, his high school team has shown improvement as the team roster increases in number and ability. The '04-'05 version of the Tanager wrestling team includes a mix of high school and middle school athletes seven sophomores, juniors, and seniors; and eleven seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-graders. While the team lacks upper classmen, the squad has a multiple of experienced wrestlers in the lower grades and will look towards these younger wrestlers to rise to the occasion and compete at the varsity level.
"I'm optimistic for the upcoming season," said the coach. "With the loss of only one senior from last year and the increased participation by multiple underclassmen, we're looking to improve on our dual record. We still have several open weight classes, but the lower lineup is looking to be rather solid. The experience many of our wrestlers gained last year bodes well for the success this upcoming season."
Joe Delvaux is O'Connor's assistant.
The season opened with a triangular meet including Lennox and Brandon Valley at the VHS gym on Tuesday, Nov. 30.
