Coyote men grab 93-63 nonconference victory The 18th-ranked South Dakota men's basketball team (16-3) snapped its two-game skid by picking up a 93-63 victory over Upper Iowa (3-15) in its final nonconference game of the season Jan. 24.
With the win, USD ran its home nonconference win streak to 82 games, which dates back to the 1992-93 season.
Senior Aaron Green had a big game for USD, recording a season-high 24 points, one shy of tying his career-high of 25. He finished just two rebounds short of a double-double as he pulled down eight boards.
Green, who was one of five players in double-figures for USD, got the Coyotes off to a quick start, scoring eight of USD's first 13 points to put the home team up 13-6 at the 15:32 mark.
Senior Josh Mueller cashed in one of his two three-pointers at the 15:00 minute mark of the first half to give the Coyotes a 16-6 lead. Sophomore Brock Seim kept the run going by hitting a trey of his own to put USD up 19-6 at 14:15, capping a 10-0 run.
The Peacocks of Upper Iowa, playing its first season in Division II, brought the game back to seven points on two occasions, but the Coyotes pulled away thanks to hot first-half shooting (46.9 percent).
In the first stanza, USD went the first 5:20 without missing a shot from either the field or the charity stripe.
South Dakota led by 13, 44-31 at intermission, but pulled away in the second half thanks to even hotter shooting (60 percent) and solid defensive play.
For the game, USD finished shooting 53.2 percent (33-of-62) from the field, including 12-of-31 (38.7 percent) behind the three-point line. The Coyotes also hit 75 percent (15-of-20) from the free throw line.
Luke Tibbetts added 13 points and three steals for the victors, while Turner Trofholz reached double-figures for the 19th straight game with 12 points. He also had nine rebounds. Steve Anderson and Dustin Little each added 10 points.
USD outrebounded the Peacocks, who committed 16 turnovers, 40-30.
Upper Iowa finished shooting 40.3 percent (25-of-62) from the field, but 6-of-17 (35.3 percent) from three-point land. The Peacocks were 7-of-8 (87.5 percent) from the free throw line.
Ernest Addae had 18 for Upper Iowa, while John Banks scored 16. Eric Ritter pitched in 10.
South Dakota will travel to Mankato, MN, to face the Minnesota State Mavericks at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29.
