Hot-shooting Hinton too much for Tanagers By Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers lost to the Hinton, IA Blackhawks 50-40 in boys� basketball Jan. 22 at North Sioux City in the first round of the Dakota Valley Classic.

�We played well at times defensively,� said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. �We kept them under 50 points. Offensively, we handled their two-on-one most of the game, but they took us out of our offense during critical situations. We need to learn how to finish a game down the stretch.�

The Blackhawks ended up hot from three-point range, canning 7 of 10 from long distance.

The teams were deadlocked 9-9 at the end of the first period, the Tanagers trailed 28-23 at halftime, and then trailed 38-30 after the third period.

The loss dropped Vermillion varsity to a record of 4-6, while Hinton improved to 10-3.

Vermillion sank 8 of 11 from the line. The Tanagers connected on 14 of 38 field goal attempts, while Hinton was 16 of 44 from the field. The Blackhawks connected on 11 of 16 free throw attempts.
