Lennox can't keep pace with Tanagers By Jim Prosser The Vermillion varsity Tanagers beat the Lennox Ladybirds 53-44 in girls basketball Jan. 10 at Lennox as the winners led after each quarter.

Annie Roche scored 19 points, pulled down five rebounds, made three assists and two steals. Alicia Brown contributed 15 points. Nine of them were from the free throw line. She made seven from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter.

The Tanagers jumped in front 16-14 at the end of the first period, went into the locker room up 29-23 at halftime, and then held a lead of 41-33 going into the fourth quarter.

Vermillion held onto the win from the free throw line, making 18 of 22 charity tosses to 5 of 12 for Lennox.

Defensively, we are playing pretty well as a unit, said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. Everyone is playing hard and we are starting to come up with the extra rebounds and loose balls that we were just a step late on earlier in the year. Down the stretch we made 12 free throws as a team to put the final score out of reach.

Our girls did a nice job of taking away second chance points from Lennox so that we were able to get out in transition and look for some easy opportunities, he said.

Vermillion improved its record to 3-3, while Lennox dropped to 3-5.

Vermillion hit 3 of 7 three-point attempts. The Tanagers hit 17 of 35 from the field, while Lennox was 18 of 44 from the field. Lennox sank 3 of 14 three-point attempts.

The Tanagers had several fine individual efforts in the victory.

Tonights effort doesnt show up on a stat sheet; its easy to look at the points and say who had an outstanding game but we did so many things well as a collective group, coach Parish said. Jackie, Ellen, and Michelle all defended well, and made some key shots and really helped out with out post defense. Melissa hit some huge shots that kept Lennox from making a run at us while defending their best post player. Annie and Alicia ran the floor so hard on every possession that it really started to wear our opponents out.

Paige Prosser, Krista Froke, and Chelsea Gauer always give us important minutes off the bench, he said. We really are very team-oriented right now. The girls are sacrificing their personal goals for those of the team and its an awesome thing to be a part of.
