Riva Sharples earns Ph.D. Riva Jane Sharples, a former Plain Talk/Wakonda Times reporter and the daughter of Doug and Judi Sharples of Wakonda, graduated Dec. 19 from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a Ph.D. in English.
A 1991 graduate of Wakonda High School, Dr. Sharples holds a B.A. degree in English from Grinnell College and an M.A. in journalism from the University of Iowa. Since 1999 she has been on the faculty at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, a state school located about 20 miles south of Erie in Edinboro.
Dr. Sharples teaches journalism and writing in the English & Theatre Arts Department and serves as assistant chair. She pursued her doctoral studies at Indiana, PA, about 140 miles south of Edinboro near Pittsburgh, while working full-time at Edinboro. She defended her dissertation in November.
Sharples� dissertation, titled �The Business of Consumer Literacy: How the Modern Book Industry Shapes What We Read,� explores the world of book publishing, specifically examining how publishers and booksellers impact readers. She is seeking publication for the work.
Dr. Sharples resides with her husband, Glen Schmidt, in Albion, PA, a small town 10 miles west of Edinboro. They are expecting their first child in February.
