Singers invited to perform Singers in the Yankton area are being invited to be part of a Palm Sunday performance of G.F. Handel's The Messiah. The March 20 concert by the Yankton Area Community Choir is being sponsored by the Yankton Ministerial Association and is funded in part by the Vivian Harvey Auld Memorial Fund.
The Yankton Area Community Choir is promoting the tradition of performing The Messiah on Palm Sunday every other year, accoreding to Kim Conlin, director and one of the organizers.
Conlin stated that singers with "a desire to be uplifted by this glorious music" are invited to attend the rehearsals which begin Feb. 6 at the First United Methodist Church, 207 West 11th Yankton. Rehearsals will run from 2 to 4 p.m. each Sunday.
The performance, Palm Sunday, March 20, is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Yankton Middle School Gymnasium, 2000 Mulberry.
Singers who do not have a personal copy of the score can purchase the Schirmer Edition at Mollett Music in Yankton.
Conlin encourages singers of all ages and levels of experience to participate. Knowing that rehearsals will conflict with major community events scheduled for Sunday afternoons, singers are encouraged to come to as many rehearsals as they are able. Conlin added that the performance is being done during the Easter season for one reason, "We are doing this for the glory of God".
