Tanager gymnasts place 2nd at Madison invitational meet

Tanager gymnasts place 2nd at Madison invitational meet By Jim Prosser The Tanager gymnasts were faced with some adversity at the Madison Gymnastics Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 15.

The extreme cold weather prevented the host team from using their regular facilities so the practice facility was implemented. It made for some very cramped and unbearable conditions. To compound the problems, two water mains broke two blocks away so there was no water during most of the meet.

The final team standings were: Madison, 138.92, Vermillion, 124.35, Wagner, 122.10, Chamberlain, 117.72, Stanley County, 115.80, Milbank, 114.32, and West Central, 105.85.

Vermillion participants and their scores and place in each event are listed below:

Emily Renner bars, 7.10.

Calle Sorensen bars, 7.15.

Amy Mart beam, 7.95.

DeNell Dykstra beam, 6.65.

Rachael Lorenz bars, 7.85; floor, 6.925.

Tia Krier floor, 5.625.

Bethany Sand floor, 5.725; vault, 7.4.

Tristen Upward beam, 6.855; floor, 6.90; vault, 7.05.

Ariel Hofman bars, 8.22; beam, 7.175; floor, 8.575 (third); vault, 9.025 (second); all-around, 33.00 (fourth).

Totals (top four each) bars, 32.025; beam, 29.55; floor, 30.575; vault, 32.225.

We had a great warm up in all the events, said coach Mark Upward. But something happened between the warm up time and the start of the meet.

The Tanagers started the team competition on the balance beam. Amy Mart led the team with her season best score of 7.95.

Except for Amy, we just didnt have the beams we needed today, Upward said. The team scored a season-low of 29.55.

The Tanagers moved to floor for their next event and scored an event total 30.575. They were led on the floor exercise by Hofmans 8.575.

In the vault, with a little pre-meet practice, the Tanagers shined. Hofman (9.025) and Christopherson (8.725) had season-best vaults on the way to a season-best 32.225 team score.

The final event for the Tanagers was the uneven parallel bars. Christopherson led the team with a season best 8.8.
