Tanager JV girls defeat Parkston 36-22 By Jim Prosser The Vermillion girls� junior varsity Tanagers topped the Parkston Lady Trojans 36-22 in girls� basketball Jan. 7 at Vermillion in a win carried by a strong first quarter.
Alicia Brown had another breakout defensive effort, with 14 rebounds and three steals.
The Tanagers jumped in front 16-2 at the end of the first period, went into the locker room up 24-12 at halftime, and then held a lead of 30-15 after the third quarter.
�We were much improved,� said Vermillion JV coach Lenni Billberg. �This was a great start to the new year.�
The Vermillion JV now has a record of 2-2, while Parkston fell to 0-4.
Vermillion hit 0 of 5 three-point attempts and made 4 of 11 free throw attempts. The Tanagers made 16 of 48 field goals, while Parkston was 8 of 37 from the field. Parkston hit 0 of 3 three-point tries and connected on 6 of 14 free throw tries.
Vermillion held a 33-21 edge on the boards.
The Tanagers had several fine individual efforts in the victory.
�Rachel Odens provided a hearty rebounding force,� coach Billberg said. �Brittni Stewart scored 10 points against a very strong defender.�
