Tanagers defeat Trojans in thrilling OT By Jim Prosser The Tanagers� Jason Donald made a lay-up in overtime with just eight seconds left in the extra period as the Vermillion Tanagers defeated the West Central Trojans 57-56 in a tight overtime battle in boys� basketball Jan. 6 at home.
The score was tied 49-49 after regulation.
�The play was set up during a time out called with 36 seconds to go,� said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska of the clinching moment. �Andrew Pier drove to the free throw line and fed the ball to Donald.�
Vermillion varsity broke into the victory column for the first time this season and is now 1-4. The West Central season mark fell to 2-2.
Andrew Pier scored 17 points, and made four steals and three assists. Donald scored nine points (four in overtime) and grabbed 13 rebounds.
The Tanagers fell behind 16-8 after the opening period, went into the locker room up 29-23 at halftime, and then trailed 40-39 going into the final period.
The Trojans tried to keep things close from three-point range, hitting 6 of 11.
�We really hung in there against a good team,� said coach Huska. �We got good shots down the stretch and and we made them. When we needed to, we played smart defense. We needed this win..�
Vermillion made 9 of 22 free throw tries. The Tanagers connected on 22 of 57 from the field, while West Central was 22 of 50 from the field. The Trojans made 6 of 17 free throw attempts.
