Tanagers never look back in win over Orioles By Jim Prosser The Vermillion varsity Tanagers defeated the Lennox Orioles 50-37 in girls� basketball Jan. 21 at Vermillion as the winners led after each quarter.
�Our girls really did a nice job defensively tonight,� said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. �We put a lot of pressure on their perimeter players so they were not able to take advantage of their strong post players. Tonight was a tough game and we did a lot of things well; we will take any good and keep building toward the end of the season.�
The Tanagers jumped ahead 17-10 at the end of the first period, led 29-16 after the second quarter, and then held a lead of 37-24 going into the final period.
Vermillion improved its season mark to 5-4, while LHS fell to 3-9.
Vermillion made 4 of 18 three-point tries and hit 14 of 23 from the line. The Tanagers hit 16 of 37 from the field, while LHS was 14 of 49 from the field. LHS connected on 2 of 11 three-point tries and connected on 7 of 13 free throw attempts.
A number of excellent individual efforts highlighted the win.
�Ellen Odson got us off to a quick first quarter start and then we clamped down defensively to hold Lennox down,� coach Parish said. �Melissa and Michelle Olson did a fabulous job defending their posts and rebounding the ball for us. Jackie Thomas and Annie Roche really worked hard to keep our turnovers down and keep things flowing within the offense for us.�
