Tanagers watch victory slip away By Jim Prosser After three hard-fought periods, the Vermillion Tanagers finally saw victory slip away and were defeated by the Lennox Orioles 59-51 in boys� basketball Jan. 14 at Lennox.
The teams battled back and forth until Lennox took control in the final period. Vermillion JV had led by five after the third quarter.
�We played well for three quarters, but lost our composure when they put on a full court press and some unscripted fouls led to the 10 free throw points and the 22-9 fourth quarter result,� said Vermillion JV coach Jon Reuvers. �I�m still satisfied with our effort.�
Vermillion JV lost the game from the free throw line, making 5 of 13 charity tosses compared with 15 of 23 for Lennox.
The Tanagers tried to stay in the game from three-point range, hitting 6 of 10 from long distance, but it wasn't enough.
The Tanagers fell behind 15-9 after the first quarter, the game was knotted 26-26 at halftime, and the Tanagers led 42-37 after the third quarter.
The loss dropped Vermillion JV to a record of 5-3, while Lennox improved to 5-3.
The Tanagers connected on 19 of 50 field goals, while Lennox was 22 of 49 from the field.
