Vermillion executes game plan, beats Pierce By Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers beat the Pierce, NE Cardinals 48-36 in boys� basketball Jan. 11 at Pierce, NE in a win keyed by a 16-2 second-quarter edge.

�We really executed the game plan,� said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. �Our defense was great at times. That was the difference. We forced them to shoot from the outside and they struggled. Offensively, we got a little passive when we wanted to be more aggressive. This was a great road win.�

The Tanagers trailed 15-7 at the end of the first period, went into the locker room up 23-17 at halftime, and then led 40-27 going into the fourth quarter.

Vermillion improved its season mark to 3-4, while Pierce fell to 7-2.

Vermillion made 0 of 4 three-pointers and sank 18 of 28 free throw attempts. The Tanagers made 15 of 31 field goal attempts, while Pierce was 13 of 43 from the field. Pierce hit 4 of 23 three-pointers and sank 6 of 7 free throw tries.
