Vermillion rallies to defeat Trojans By Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers rallied in the second half and then pulled away to top the Parkston Trojans 56-43 in boys� basketball Jan. 7 at home in a win capped by a 25-7 fourth-quarter surge.
Vermillion varsity had trailed by three at halftime.
Jason Donald scored 18 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Ben Oberle had eight boards and five steals.
�Ben has returned from a football injury he suffered last November,� said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. �He really sparked the fourth quarter dominance by the team.�
The Tanagers fell behind 12-8 after the first quarter, trailed 22-19 after the second quarter, and then trailed 36-31 after the third quarter.
�It took us awhile, but we took advantage of our bench and down the stretch made the shots,� said coach Huska. �Great effort by everyone. We never gave up, even when we were down. We are gradually getting better and better. Good win for us.�
Vermillion now has a record of 2-4, while Parkston fell to 3-2.
Vermillion hit 5 of 14 three-pointers and connected on 17 of 25 from the line. The Tanagers connected on 17 of 52 field goal attempts, while Parkston was 16 of 43 from the field. Parkston connected on 4 of 18 three-point attempts and hit 7 of 11 from the line.
