Vermillion wins close matchup with Huskies By Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers beat the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 36-31 in boys� basketball Jan. 18 at Elk Point in a matchup that was close throughout.
Ryan Powell scored 13 points and made five assists.
�Ryan had a great game shooting the ball and doing his job, and that is getting his teammates involved,� said Vermillion JV coach Jon Reuvers.
The Tanagers jumped ahead 12-7 after the opening period, went into the locker room up 15-12 at halftime, and then led 23-20 after the third quarter.
The Tanagers heated things up from three-point range, hitting 4 of 8 from long distance.
�We played hard throughout and pulled out a victory,� said coach Reuvers. �It was a good win on the road and put us back in the winners column.�
Vermillion improved its season mark to 6-3, while EP-J fell to 4-5.
Vermillion connected on 5 of 6 from the line. The Tanagers connected on 14 of 35 field goals, while EP-J was 13 of 36 from the field. The Huskies connected on 1 of 3 free throws.
