Wakonda triumphs over Centerville 62-49 By Bethany Parvin The Wakonda Warriors boy's basketball team may be the local team to rally around as they finish the first third of their season undefeated, 6-0. The team's latest victim was the Centerville Tornadoes on Jan. 6.
In the first quarter, Wakonda came out with a hot hand throwing down 22 points while suppressing Centerville to 12 points.
In the second quarter, Centerville put some effort into their game and added 19 points to the scoreboard. Wakonda put up three less with 16 points ending the half 38-31, with the Warriors at a seven point advantage.
Coming out of the half, the Warriors were ready to play defense. They held Centerville to five points. The Warrior offense blew past the defense by banking 12 points of their own.
The Warriors held a 50-36 lead at the end of the third quarter.
In the final quarter it was a back and forth battle. Centerville out scored the Warriors by one point this quarter. They scored 13 to the host's 12, but it wasn't enough.The final score of the game was Warriors 62, Centerville 49.
Tyler Moser was the leading scorer with 20 points while Alex Nielsen nailed 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Eric Skonhovd defended his goal by blocking four shots; he also dished out seven assists to his teammates.
The Wakonda JV over powered the Centerville JV as well. The final score in that game was 55-24. Adam Polley was the leading scorer with 15 points. He also had 11 rebounds. Tyler Knudson and Bo Martz both added 11 points.
