Freshmen Tanagers leash Bulldogs 39-21 By Jim Prosser The Vermillion freshmen Tanagers pulled away in the last stanza to overcome the Madison Bulldogs 39-21 in girls� basketball Jan. 25 at Vermillion in a win capped by a 17-0 fourth-quarter surge.
The VHS freshmen had led by only one heading into the final quarter.
�We played great team defense and held Madison to only 21 points,� said VHS freshmen coach Leah Bakke. �We also did a great job hitting the open shots. We were shooting with confidence.�
The Tanagers jumped ahead 11-5 after the first quarter, led 20-14 at halftime, and then led 22-21 going into the fourth quarter.
VHS now has a record of 2-2, while MHS fell to 1-3.
Vermillion hit 1 of 4 three-pointers and made 2 of 3 from the line. The Tanagers hit 18 of 37 from the field, while MHS was 9 of 29 from the field. MHS made 0 of 4 three-point tries and connected on 3 of 6 free throw tries.
