Freshmen Tanagers pull away, win 27-14 By Jim Prosser The Vermillion freshmen Tanagers pulled away in the second half to defeat the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 27-14 in girls� basketball Jan. 18 at Elk Point.
VHS had led by only five in the third period in a game where the Tanagers held the Huskies to only 6 field goals.
�We came out and played great defense,� said VHS freshmen coach Leah Bakke. �We moved the ball well and got some good open looks and knocked them down.�
The Tanagers committed only 7 turnovers in the victory.
The Tanagers took the lead 9-6 after the first quarter, and margins of 4-2 and 6-2 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 19-10 going into the final period.
VHS improved its record to 1-1, while Elk Point-Jefferson dropped to 0-3.
Vermillion hit 1 of 3 three-point attempts and sank 2 of 3 from the line. The Tanagers connected on 12 of 31 field goals, while EP-J was 6 of 25 from the field. Elk Point-Jefferson made 0 of 4 three-point attempts and connected on 2 of 2 from the line.
