JV defeats Raiderette varsity By Jim Prosser The Vermillion girls� junior varsity Tanagers downed the Gayville-Volin varsity Raiderettes 53-45 in girls� basketball Feb. 7 at Gayville. The Tanagers shot 51 percent from the field for the game.
Alicia Brown, in her first full game, scored 11 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and stole four passes.
�This game gives us a great outlook for the future,� said Vermillion JV coach Lenni Billberg.
The Tanagers fell behind 12-9 at the end of the first period, led 28-19 after the second quarter, and then led 39-28 after the third period.
Vermillion JV carried the game from long range, making 6 of 9 three pointers to 1 of 8 for Gayville-Volin.
�We had a much improved offensive effort,� said coach Billberg.
Vermillion improved its record to 9-5, while Gayville-Volin dropped to 7-8.
Vermillion made 3 of 13 free throw tries. The Tanagers made 22 of 43 field goals, while Gayville-Volin was 17 of 62 from the field. The Raiderettes made 10 of 21 free throw attempts.
Vermillion held a 42-22 edge on the boards.
The close win had several contributors to the cause.
�Chelsea Gauer scored 15 points, made six assists and grabbed five boards,� coach Billberg said. �Paige Prosser poured in 10 points and Kinsey Weydert contributed nine points.�
