Poor-shooting Tanagers defeated 58-30 By Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers were defeated by the Madison Bulldogs 58-30 in boys� basketball Feb. 5 at Madison as the Tanagers shot just 27 percent from the field.

C.J. Haakinson played well on both ends of the court, scoring five points and grabbing six rebounds.

The Tanagers fell behind 13-8 after the opening period, trailed 28-15 at halftime, and then trailed 42-24 going into the final period.

�Our kids are starting to learn their roles,� said Vermillion freshmen coach Eric VanLaecken.

The loss dropped Vermillion to a record of 3-4, while Madison improved to 5-2.

Vermillion sank 2 of 6 three-pointers and connected on 4 of 7 free throw attempts. The Tanagers connected on 10 of 37 field goals, while Madison was 24 of 52 from the field. Madison sank 3 of 10 three-point attempts and connected on 7 of 12 free throw tries.

Vermillion was outrebounded 33-20.

Although defeated, the Tanagers had some individual bright spots.

�Broc Gauer scored seven points and made three steals,� coach VanLaecken said.
