Public meeting planned for Cherry Street project The South Dakota Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing Tuesday, Feb. 22, from 5 to 6 p.m. to discuss and receive public input about the SD Highway 50 (Cherry Street) project in Vermillion.
The hearing will be held at the National Guard Armory at 603 Princeton Street in Vermillion.
SDDOT plans to make improvements on three miles of the highway from the west junction of SD19 to the beginning of the divided highway east of town. The project includes widening the section between James Street and Cottage Avenue to three lanes, replacing the section between Cottage and Plum with the same lane configuration and widening the section from Plum to Crawford Street to five lanes.
The highway will get a new concrete surface and storm sewer. Crews will also replace sidewalks where needed. In addition, the loop ramp on SD 50 will be modified and a left turn lane will be added at the west junction of SD19. The $4.6 million project is scheduled for the 2007 construction season.
SDDOT personnel will be available with displays to discuss the proposed project and answer questions. Information will be available on the acquisition of right-of-way, relocation assistance, the environmental impacts of the project, and the economic and social effects of the project's location and design.
The public will also be able to present written comments at the meeting.
