Strong first quarter carries VHS By Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers beat the Beresford Watchdogs 55-44 in boys� basketball Feb. 1 at Beresford in a win carried by a strong first quarter.

Jordan Boots scored 24 points and pulled down five rebounds. Jeff Donnelly contributed 12 points, five assists and three steals.

�Both contributed to the offense and the defense,� said Vermillion JV coach Jon Reuvers.

The Tanagers led 16-4 after the first quarter, led 24-18 at halftime, and then led 37-27 after the third quarter.

The Tanagers heated things up from three-point range, hitting 6 of 12 from long distance.

�Hard work and determination equaled success for our junior varsity squad on the road,� said coach Reuvers.

Vermillion JV improved its record to 9-3, while Beresford dropped to 6-8.

Vermillion JV made 9 of 12 from the line. The Tanagers connected on 20 of 48 from the field, while Beresford was 16 of 47 from the field. The Watchdogs sank 6 of 12 from the line.
