Tanager comeback not enough for win By Jim Prosser The Vermillion varsity Tanagers fell short in a fourth-quarter comeback and were defeated by the Wagner Red Raiders 42-38 in girls� basketball Feb. 15 at Vermillion.
Vermillion had trailed by 11 after three periods.
Jackie Thomas scored 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Melissa Olson contributed 10 points, five rebounds and four steals.
The Tanagers fell behind 11-5 at the end of the first period, trailed 19-9 at halftime, and then trailed 31-20 after the third period.
�We didn�t play very well tonight,� said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. �Wagner is a team that plays hard and is always very disciplined. The have seventh- and eighth-graders that play with their B and C teams every year and it shows throughout their program that there is consistency and it really works well for them.
�As a consolation, our kids didn�t give up; they played hard and got themselves back in the game. That speaks volumes about their character,� he said. �Even though the game wasn�t a great game for us, they battled and gave it all that they had to make a run at them. We will keep working to get better.�
Vermillion saw its record fall to 9-9, while Wagner upped its mark to 11-7.
Vermillion sank 3 of 14 three-pointers and sank 3 of 7 free throw attempts. The Tanagers connected on 16 of 48 field goal attempts, while Wagner was 16 of 39 from the field. Wagner sank 0 of 3 three-point attempts and sank 10 of 22 from the line.
