Tanager freshmen can't stop late rally By Jim Prosser The Vermillion freshmen Tanagers ended up on the wrong side of a fourth-quarter rally and dropped a close decision to the Wagner Red Raiders 30-29 in girls� basketball Feb. 15 at Vermillion.
VHS had led by three after the third quarter.
Annika Sjolie scored six points, pulled down three rebounds and made one assist. Margaret Mueller contributed with six steals and played super hard defense.
VHS jumped ahead 10-2 after the first quarter, but was outscored 13-12 in the second period and 8-4 in the third to lead 26-23 going into the final period.
�Our defense was very solid in the first half and our shots were falling in,� said VHS freshmen coach Leah Bakke. �We did let up a little in the second half and fell behind. We were unable to pull ahead at the end.�
The loss dropped VHS to a record of 6-4, while Wagner improved to 3-3.
VHS made 0 of 2 three-point tries and connected on 5 of 15 from the line. The Tanagers connected on 12 of 35 field goal attempts, while Wagner was 11 of 35 from the field. Wagner connected on 0 of 2 three-point tries and hit 8 of 19 free throw attempts.
The Tanagers had several noteworthy individual efforts in defeat.
�Brittany Bye grabbed eight boards and Kinsey Weydert made three assists,� coach Bakke said.
