Tanager varsity tops Madison 47-36 By Jim Prosser The Vermillion varsity Tanagers topped the Madison Bulldogs 47-36 in girls basketball Jan. 25 at Vermillion. The Tanagers shot 50 percent from the field for the game.
Our girls played really hard tonight; we have been battling some sickness and it limited some of the girls minutes, but they played hard throughout the entire game and really did a pretty nice job defensively, said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. We still need to work harder on rebounding against physical teams. We defend well enough that most teams dont shoot a high percentage on their first attempt. However, if we continue to give teams so many second shots its going to catch up with us.
The Tanagers took the lead 18-11 after the first quarter, and margins of 14-9 and 8-5 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 40-25 going into the final period.
Vermillion improved its season mark to 6-5, while MHS fell to 2-8.
Vermillion hit 3 of 9 three-pointers and made 10 of 14 free throw tries. The Tanagers sank 17 of 34 from the field, while MHS was 12 of 49 from the field. MHS hit 0 of 4 three-point tries and connected on 12 of 21 free throw attempts.
Several significant individual efforts contributed to the win.
As the stats show, tonight was a team effort, with everyone sharing the load on offense and playing hard together on defense, coach Parish said.
