Tanagers can't keep up with West Central By Jim Prosser The Vermillion varsity Tanagers were defeated by the West Central Trojans 61-46 in girls basketball Feb. 8 at Hartford as the winners held the lead after each quarter.
This game was closer than the score indicated, said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. We had West Central in a two-point game with about five minutes left in the contest. Unfortunately, their girls made some big time shots. Our girls were defending them fairly well and they just made some tough shots that caused us to try to force the issue and then they made their free throws to stretch it out in the end.
We were very happy with the effort, but not satisfied. Our girls know they played well and were proud but still had a little bit of a sour taste in their mouths knowing how close they came to upsetting the number two team in the state, he said.
The Trojans ended up hot from three-point range, canning 5 of 9 from long distance.
West Central jumped in front 16-7 after the first quarter, and held an edge of 16-14 in the second quarter. Vermillion had an advantage of 17-13 in the third period to shave the deficit to only 45-38 going into the final period.
Vermillion saw its record fall to 9-8, while West Central upped its mark to 10-7.
Vermillion sank 9 of 11 free throw attempts. The Tanagers sank 15 of 40 field goals, while West Central was 23 of 46 from the field. The Trojans hit 9 of 11 from the line.
The Tanagers had several noteworthy individual efforts in defeat.
Its difficult to pick an individual performance that stood out, coach Parish said. With Alicia Brown and Paige Prosser both out of action, our bench kids (Chelsea Gauer, Anna Isaacson, Krista Froke and Brittni Stewart) did give us some very important minutes that kept us in the game. Our starters played pretty courageously throughout the game; they had to play extended minutes due to the shortened bench and played extremely hard right up to the final buzzer.
