Tanagers outplay Panthers 61-50 By Jim Prosser The Vermillion varsity Tanagers downed the Dakota Valley Panthers 61-50 in girls basketball Feb. 8 at Vermillion as the winners led after each quarter.
This was a pretty important win for us, against a district opponent, and we were trying to secure the #1 seed in our district, said Vermillion coach Jamie Parish. Dakota Valley didnt lose much from last years team that played in the regional final against Parker, so we knew it would take our best effort. The really big difference between our girls this year and last year is how team-oriented we are this year. They really play hard and play together.
As coaches we can see the difference on a daily basis on how hard our kids play in practice every day and it shows up in our games, too. Its such a great feeling as coaches to see so many parts working together for the betterment of the whole, which is the ultimate compliment that we can give or receive as a team, he said. Its amazing what you can accomplish when no one cares who gets the credit.
The Tanagers took the lead 13-4 after the first quarter, and margins of 18-14 and 18-14 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 49-32 going into the final period.
Vermillion improved its season mark to 8-8, while Dakota Valley fell to 6-10.
