Tanagers win in double overtime By Jim Prosser The Vermillion freshmen Tanagers defeated the Canton C-Hawks 20-18 in a knuckle-whitening double overtime thriller in girls basketball Feb. 5 at Vermillion.
The score was tied 17-17 after regulation.
Rachel Odens scored eight points and pulled down seven rebounds. Kinsey Weydert contributed six points. She made three of them in overtime, and also made three steals.
�We played hard during the last half and during the two overtimes, which won us the game,� said VHS freshmen coach Leah Bakke. �We still have improvements to make and will continue work hard on them.�
The Tanagers fell behind 7-4 after the first quarter, trailed 11-9 at halftime, and the score was 15-all after the third quarter. The score was tied at 17 after the first overtime.
Both sides were plagued by turnovers, with the Tanagers turning it over 32 times, and the C-Hawks committing 24 turnovers.
VHS improved its record to 4-2, while Canton dropped to 4-4.
VHS sank 1 of 3 three-pointers and sank 7 of 14 free throw attempts. The Tanagers hit 6 of 33 from the field, while Canton was 8 of 30 from the field. Canton hit 0 of 2 three-point attempts and hit 2 of 5 from the line.
The winners needed good efforts from several performers.
�Both of the teams combined for 56 turnovers in a rather ?sloppy� game which also included 30 total fouls,� coach Bakke said.
