Trojans edge Tanager girls' JV 39-36 By Jim Prosser The Vermillion girls� junior varsity Tanagers were edged by the West Central Trojans 39-36 in girls� basketball Jan. 27 at Vermillion.
�We are at our best when no one stands out � when everyone plays their role,� said Vermillion JV coach Lenni Billberg. �Tonight, we all did everything in our power to win but didn�t. However, we are much improved.�
The Tanagers fell behind 11-9 after the first quarter, trailed 21-20 at halftime, and then trailed 33-30 after the third quarter.
Vermillion saw its record fall to 3-6, while WCHS upped its mark to 2-6.
Vermillion made 1 of 4 three-point tries and sank 7 of 15 from the line. The Tanagers hit 14 of 43 field goals, while WCHS was 17 of 39 from the field. WCHS sank 0 of 3 three-pointers and hit 5 of 13 free throw attempts.
Even with the loss, the Tanagers had several good individual efforts.
�Chelsea Gauer scored nine points in three quarters,� coach Billberg said. �Alicia Brown had three steals, and Brittni Stewart grabbed five rebounds. We had strong post play from Brittany Bye.�
