Trojans top poor-shooting Tanagers By Jim Prosser The Vermillion freshmen Tanagers were topped by the West Central Trojans 27-18 in girls� basketball Jan. 27 at Vermillion as the Tanagers shot only 17 percent from the field.
�Our defense was lacking this game but the girls played hard to stay in the game,� said VHS freshmen coach Leah Bakke.
The loss was aided by the Tanagers committing 26 turnovers.
The Tanagers trailed 8-3 after the first quarter, trailed 16-11 at halftime, and then trailed 23-15 after the third period.
VHS saw its record fall to 2-3, while WCHS upped its mark to 4-4.
VHS connected on 0 of 2 three-pointers and made 6 of 17 from the line. The Tanagers connected on 6 of 35 from the field, while WCHS was 12 of 37 from the field. WCHS connected on 0 of 3 three-pointers and hit 3 of 10 free throw tries.
The Tanagers had some excellent individual performances in defeat.
�Brittany Bye did an outstanding job down low, grabbing 12 boards and going after every loose ball,� coach Bakke said.
